IPOH: A man proudly announced yesterday that he and his son had scored 24 1As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination. To get the news into the newspaper, he called a reporter from a Tamil daily to his house and showed him the result slips. The slips showed that the man was aged 53 and his son was 13 years old. Asked why he had sat for the examination, the man replied that he wanted to motivate his son. Suspecting something amiss, especially with the "24 1As", the reporter contacted the Perak Education Department to verify the results.
Department director Mohammed Zakaria Mohd Noor said yesterday the names of the man and his son were not on the list of candidates. Speaking to announce the SPM results here, he noted that the result slips had several discrepancies, including wrong spellings of some subjects and the wordings "pelajar ini lulus 100 peratus dalam semua mata pelajaran" (this student has 100 per cent passes in all subjects), which under normal circumstances is not stated in the slips. Zakaria said the department would submit a report to the Education Ministry and the Examination Board.
